The Majesty World

Majesty's world, named Ardania, is a land rich in myths and legends. Ardania is realm of heroes, magic and mythical beasts inspired by Medieval fantasy and an assortment of other mythologies. Many aspects of Ardania are referenced throughout the game in quests briefings and unit descriptions. However, only the Majesty strategy guide published by Prima Games Contains a detailed treatise on the background history of Ardania.
Ardania is an island continent with diverse terrains surrounded by water. Southern Ardania contains swamps, plains, forests and most of the important cities in the land. Northern Ardania, on the other hand, is mostly mountainous. The southern half of the mountains is known as the Hellfire Mountains, home to an assortment of creatures. The far northern sections of Ardania is a snowy region known as the Northern Reaches, a region home to few large-scale civilizations. In various references throughout the game and related content, there also exists an "underworld" and "the heavens".

An Overview of Ardania

Intelligent Races and Species

  • Humans: The humans were first created by the rage of Krolm, the father god. The earliest humans were barbarians who followed an austere lifestyle. While barbarian followers of Krolm still exist, most humans have developed into more complicated societies. Many now worship an assortment of gods descended from Krolm. Humans are present in nearly all habitable regions of Ardania.
  • Dwarves: The Dwarves had already been around when the first barbarians appeared under Krolm. The Dwarves are very skilled in building and weapon-making. In exchange for forging Krolm a mighty sword, the Dwarves were great warrior strength by the god. The Dwarves are renown in particular for their Mithril weapons and armor, known to many human blacksmiths as the "Dwarven Steel".
  • Gnomes: The Gnomes are another race who eventually settled into human society. The Gnomes resemble "small" humans and are renown for both filth and industriousness.
  • Elves: Long after the development of human cities, the Elves arrived in Ardania sailing from the East. They first settled in Treldan Wood. Since their arrival, the Elves have introduced luxury, pleasure, and vice to the human societies. Elves are noted for their luxurious lifestyle and their skill in archery.
  • Goblins: While small in size, the goblins have developed into a society with a clear command hierarchy. Goblins frequently raid cities in war parties led by their priests who worship Grom-Gog, the goblin god.
  • Ratmen: The Ratmen are bipedal rats who live in the sewers. They frequently come up to the ground seeking surface conquest.
  • Others: Other intelligent species include the serpents, who gathered under Scrylia the Serpent Queen, and the Dragons, once under the famed Dragon King.

Creatures and Other Inhabitants

Ardania is home to a wide assortment of creatures, animals, beasts, and even monsters. The most commonly found inhabitants of the wild are animals, many of which grow to large sizes. Less common but more ferocious are beasts and monster-like creatures such as rocs, werewolves, wendigos, medusae, and dragons. As magic and new godly powers arose, new creatures such as the Vampire and other undead appeared. Nature spirits such as Rock Golems and Daemonwood are also present.

Gods

There are seven main deities in Ardania:
  • Krolm: Krolm is the father god, and according to the Majesty Manual, the creator of Ardania. His followers are the Barbarians.
  • Lunord (God of the moon) and Helia (Goddess of the Sun): Lunord and his rival sister Helia are children of Krolm and an unmentioned mother.
  • The children of Lunord and Helia: Fervus, Krypta, Dauros, Agrela who form the gods of Chaos, Death, Law, and Life, respectively. Followers of Fervus and Krypta are opposed to those of Dauros and Agrela due to the nature of the gods' domains.
  • Grum-Gog: god of the goblins and brother to Fervus, Krypta, Dauros and Agrela.

Kingdoms

At the start of the original Majesty game, Ardania is a fragmented realm with many kingdoms. The game progresses as the player completes various quests scattered across the continent starting from the south, implying a gradual unification of the continent. However, the exact details of this unification, such as which areas actually came under direct control of "the sovereign" and the organizational structure of the kingdom, is never explicitly stated.
