Many of the hero classes start with the Spellcasting ability and learn new spells by gaining levels. Other heroes need to learn spell casting from the library. Eventually, all heroes have access to two spells learnable from the library: Powershock and Flameshield.

For some heroes the first contact with magic will come from praying in one of the Temples. The gods of Ardania bestow magical blessings on those who show their allegiance. For the starting hero - and often for the advanced heroe too - these blessings can mean the difference between live and death. And even the transition from death to live in case of the Resurrection blessing. For more information on gaining these blessing, see Temples.

A third source for spells are from items. Certain items carry a fixed amount of charges for casting a certain spell (see: charged items). There are also items such as the Teevus Staff which gives unlimited usage to a spell as long as the item is equipped. Heroes are not the only ones who can use magic. Ardania is home to some very powerfully adversaries, who cast spell after spell in combat. As with the hero spells, these can be beneficial - for them! - or destructive - for you.

Below is the list of spells you can encounter in Ardania. Enchantments and temple blessings are also listed in this category as they also appear under the "spells" sidebar.

Petrify Greater Gorgon Jewel of the Gorgon One opponent is frozen in place for 6 rounds in combat. Magic Resistance halves duration to 3 rounds.
Summon Medusa Greater Gorgon Summons a Medusa during combat.
Paralytic Gaze Evil Oculus, Shade, Flesh Hunter Shaman, Banshee Shard of Transfixion, Large Oculus Eye, Wand of Paralyzation Opponent is paralyzed for 5 turns. (Gameplay note: "turns" means ingame rounds!)
Invisibility Leprechaun Chieftain Invisibility Gem Caster becomes invisible for first 5 rounds in combat.
Invisibility Invisible Troll Caster becomes invisible for 10 rounds in combat. Can be cast every 12 rounds. Compare with Aura of Peace of Healer.
Radiate Energy Shade, Warlock, Dark Spider Gemstone of Death Causes 25 points of damage to all opponents.
Wither Shade, Goblin Wight Reduces opponent's Strenght by 10, and slows him in combat.
Anti-Magic Shield Shade Anti-Magic Gem Caster's Magic Resistance is boosted by 90.
FireShield Shade, Specter, Dark Knight, Shadow Thief, Greater Werewolf Increases caster's Armor by 5 and magic resistance by 25.
Resist Magic Shade, Specter Increases caster's Magic Resistance by 35.
Animate Skeleton Goblin Wight, Liche Creates skeleton follower.
Control Undead Goblin Wight Charms an undead to become a follower. Undead include Skeletons, Vampires and Zombies.
Summon Shadowbeast Greater Wight Summons Shadowbeast during combat.
